7 Proven IELTS Reading Tips to Score Band 7+
Struggling with IELTS Reading? These 7 strategies will help you manage time, avoid traps, and push your band score to 7 or higher.
The IELTS Academic Reading section is 60 minutes, 40 questions, and 3 passages that get progressively harder. Most test-takers lose marks not because they lack English skills — but because they use the wrong strategy. Here are 7 tips that work.
1. Read the Questions First, Not the Passage
This is the single biggest time-saver. Before reading any passage, scan all the questions for that passage. Underline keywords. Then when you read, you know exactly what you're looking for — you're not reading blindly.
2. Don't Read Every Word
IELTS Reading rewards skimming and scanning, not deep reading. Your job is to locate information fast, not understand every sentence. Practice reading the first and last sentence of each paragraph to get the gist, then scan for the specific answer.
3. Watch Out for "Not Given" Traps
True / False / Not Given is the question type that trips up the most test-takers. The key rule:
- True — the statement matches what the passage says
- False — the passage says the opposite
- Not Given — the topic may be in the passage, but this specific claim is never made
If you find yourself guessing between False and Not Given, ask: "Does the passage contradict this, or does it just not mention it?" If it only doesn't mention it — it's Not Given.
4. Transfer Answers Carefully
Unlike IELTS Listening, there is no extra transfer time in Reading. You write directly on the answer sheet. Spelling matters — copy answers word-for-word from the passage when the question asks you to. "Workers" ≠ "worker."
5. Don't Spend More Than 20 Minutes Per Passage
Divide your 60 minutes equally: 20 minutes per passage. If you're stuck on a question for more than 90 seconds, skip it and come back. Spending 5 minutes on one hard question means you might not finish the third passage.
6. The Answer Follows the Order of the Passage
For most question types (except matching headings and matching features), the answers appear in the same order as the passage. Question 1's answer is near the beginning, Question 13's answer is near the end. Use this to navigate faster.
7. Practice With Official Materials
Only use Cambridge IELTS books (1–19) for practice. Third-party materials often have slightly different question formats that train you for the wrong thing. The real exam is made by Cambridge — practice with Cambridge.
