IELTS Listening Tips: How to Score Band 8
The IELTS Listening section is the one part of the exam where most test-takers can score higher than their current level. Here's how to get Band 8.
IELTS Listening is played once, no rewind. You hear the audio, you answer the questions — that's it. The good news: unlike Reading or Writing, Listening is highly trainable with the right habits. Here's how to maximize your score.
Understand the Format First
The Listening section has 4 parts, 40 questions, and takes about 30 minutes (plus 10 minutes to transfer answers).
| Part | Setting | Difficulty | |------|---------|-----------| | Part 1 | Two people in a social situation (e.g., booking a hotel) | Easiest | | Part 2 | One person speaking about a social topic (e.g., local services) | Easy–Medium | | Part 3 | 2–4 people in an academic or training context | Medium–Hard | | Part 4 | One person giving an academic lecture | Hardest |
Parts 3 and 4 are where most people drop marks. Focus your practice there.
Tip 1: Read Ahead During the Pause
Before each part begins, you get a short pause to read the questions. Use every second of it. Underline keywords — names, numbers, locations, dates. This tells your brain what to listen for before the audio starts.
During the audio, you're not "listening" in a general sense — you're scanning for specific information you already know to expect.
Tip 2: Answer as You Listen, Not After
Don't try to hold answers in your memory and write them all at the end. Write each answer as you hear it. If you miss one, leave it blank and move on — don't replay it in your head while the recording continues. Missing one answer trying to remember another is how people lose 3–4 marks at once.
Tip 3: Spelling Counts
Answers transferred to the answer sheet are marked on spelling. Common traps:
- Proper nouns — names and places. Listen extra carefully, and the recording will often spell them out (e.g., "That's S-M-I-T-H").
- Plurals — "parking permit" vs "parking permits"
- Homophones — "their" vs "there", "no" vs "know"
If the recording spells something out, write exactly what you hear letter by letter.
Tip 4: Watch for Distractors
IELTS Listening is specifically designed to trick you. A common pattern:
"The meeting is on Thursday... actually, sorry, we had to move it — it's now Friday."
The answer is Friday, but test-takers who stop listening after "Thursday" get it wrong. Always listen to the full sentence before writing your answer, and watch for correction phrases like:
- "Actually..."
- "I meant..."
- "Sorry, I should say..."
- "Wait, let me correct that..."
Tip 5: Use the 10-Minute Transfer Time Strategically
At the end of the recording, you get 10 minutes to transfer your answers to the answer sheet. Use this time to:
- Transfer answers clearly (capital letters for clarity)
- Check your spelling
- Check that singular/plural matches the question
- Fill in any blanks you skipped — a guess is better than a blank
You will not lose marks for a wrong guess. Never leave a blank.
Tip 6: Train With Real Accents
IELTS uses British, Australian, American, and Canadian accents — often in the same section. If you've only practiced with American English, British accents will slow you down on exam day.
Train with:
- BBC podcasts and news
- Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) radio
- Cambridge IELTS listening tests (books 1–19)
Band Score Guide for Listening
| Band | Correct Answers (out of 40) | |------|-----------------------------| | 9.0 | 39–40 | | 8.5 | 37–38 | | 8.0 | 35–36 | | 7.5 | 32–34 | | 7.0 | 30–31 | | 6.5 | 26–29 | | 6.0 | 23–25 |
Band 8 requires 35–36 correct answers. That means you can miss 4–5 questions and still hit Band 8. Focus on eliminating avoidable errors — spelling mistakes, distractors, and blanks left unfilled — before trying to push comprehension.
